Need a flip chart & markers! and reserve meeting room - Irmgarde & Jen in  Riverside

Talk to Mary and ask if system will provide & how ... fruit plate, hors d'oeuvres, coffee/tea, soft drinks, water - Irene

Ask Marketing for "thank-you's or incentives" for Educators' focus groups - 20-24 educators (2 nights)

Introductions - Irene (why we are here, what we have done so far, [be sure to mention this is based on survey results] purpose of the page & partnership) - Have educators introduce themselves.

Introduce the team (whoever is there and who is missing) - Irene

Introduce the website - Irmgarde (explain that it's a mock-up)

Questions:

1.  What do you expect to find under each category? - From the home page, explain the center content, then the labels on the right hand side... what do these labels suggest would be there? Then show what IS there and talk about that. - Irmgarde

For Home School group - Are these other sections valuable to you? What would? - Irmgarde

2.  Are there any categories that you would like us to add? (sw) - Once done, What is missing? Anything you'd like to see here.

What would make you want to use this page? - Irmgarde

3.  Will you recommend this page to your colleagues? (sw) - Irene

4. How can we promote this page to teachers/educators?

5.  Conceptually, what do you like best/least about this page? (sw) - Jennifer

6. Anything else you'd like to tell us about the library and how we could support educators? - Jennifer

7. Wrap-up - Irene

Please post examples of what you liked from other libraries next to the feature listed below.  If you can think of any additional questions to ask teachers at the focus group. list them also.  Pleae initial.

Features:

Info guides - premade lists, pathfinders from the catalog

Links to training contacts

HCPL Speakers bureau

Assignment Alert

Useful Websites

Links to MyLibrary and other downloadable media

Teacher Tool Box

  •  I haven't seen anything better for a Teacher Tool Box than what we found on the Lake Villa District Library (km) http://www.lvdl.org/ChildrensLibrary/ResourcesforTeachers/tabid/181/Default.aspx
  • This is one of the best, I agree as well. It allows us to work towards a site that is clean and easy to navigate. Other sites like Hennipen Co. have a Toolbox for Teachers, but this organization has more text. I would suggest that if we preview the Lake Villa District Tool Box, we ask teachers if they undsteand what they will probably find under each tab. Also, HCPL would create our own "categories" within the Tool Box format (JR). Sorry, but I disagree... I prefer the Hennepin County one... there is much more content. (ib)
  • Here's another version of a Teachers Toolbox: Carroll County PL  http://teachers.carr.org/
  • This is quite comprehensive ... http://www.multcolib.org/schoolcorps/  includes training plus booklists plust "bucket of books" by topic (curriculum support)

Teacher Newsletter (e-newsletter)

Accelerated reader lists

School liaison names and contact info

Links to Library 2.0 - self directed learning

  • I did not find any reference or links to Web 2.0 on any of the sites listed. I did a Google search of "web 2.0"+library+educators and came up blank. Is web 2.0 relevant to educators? And if so, could it simply be a listing of links broken down by category like the Info Guides? (JS)

Info on Homeschooling

      Assessments:

    State laws

    Booklists from the catalog

    Lesson Plans

    Vendors and Catalogs

    Addresses of homeschool associations

What Other Libraries Are Doing

Homework: Post what you like and don't like about these websites.  If you have another site you find interesting, please add it to the list. (Please list your thoughts in a bullet format and initial)

http://www.lvccld.org/homework_help/index.cfm

  • I like the featured info guide.  i.e. The bookcart from e-library would be a great feature to promote. (ig)
  • Link to e-reference books is a great idea (ig)
  • Links to in-service traing contact good.  It all goes to the webmaster however.  Better to go to school liaison? --- I agree, a link to school liaison's email would be better (sw)
  • I like the assignment alert list feature, but might not be used since most teachers post assignments on EdLine. (jr)
  • I liked the info guide features, like our idea of online pathfinders. (jr)
  • I liked the section that had useful websites for teachers-making it easier for them to find targeted info (jr)
  • Of course, we need an online assignment alert, but this one seems very complicated. I think that we should have one on our page, but maybe an option on the alert page to just "email the info" instead of filling out a form since most teachers said they prefer email. (jr)
  • I liked the section of "Virtual Libraries" that allowed for teachers to electronically submit requests for in-service training. (jr)
  • I liked how in the "Virtual Libraries" section they plugged the eMedia resources (downloadable stuff) for "after hours enjoyment". Good way to market Overdrive, MyLibraryDV, etc. (jr)
  • I didn't find a lot of info on homeschool resources on this page. It's good that we're planning on providing info to that group. (km)
  • Did anyone else play with the "customize page design" under the middle & high school section? This would be fun for the students visiting the site, but I don't think the parents or teachers would care about this feature. (km)
  • About the look and feel of this page - the animation makes it fun for the student, but the layout differs from one age level to the next. I'm not thrilled with the inconsistancy. (km)

http://www.fauquiercounty.gov/government/departments/library/index.cfm?action=yseducators

  •  Bring the library to you link (speakers) - good idea (ig) I agree, like our concept of Speakers' Bureau (jr) yes (km)
  •  Links books on sbjects (pathfinders)  directly to the catalog - good idea (ig) agree (jr)-how would be update?
  •  Links to curriculum standards (ig) yes, we could do this too (jr)
  •  Links the web links to lesson plans (ig)
  • Too much on page?  Perhaps hard to find contact info and other things you might want to get to quickly (sw) I thought that they page was "clean' and fairly easy to navigate. I liked the use of white space (jr)
  • I liked the placement of the homeschool info, and the use of links. (jr)
  • Do you think the links to education news is necessary here? Maybe for the homeschooling parents. (km)

http://ccclib.org/youth/TeachersCaregiversPage/TeachersPage.htm

  •  to much to read and scroll (ig) -- agree (sw) yes (km)
  • simple and easy to understand assignment alert form (sw) but too hard to find-who knows it is there unless one scrolls down? (jr)
  •  the page wasn't very interactive, few links, it didn't seem well constructed - as if it was a typed word document posted on-line. (km)
  • I was unsure of why the story time guidelines were included here, but it sounds as if librarians will take story times on the road to the schools. (km)

http://www2.anaheim.net/article.cfm?id=123

  •  not much to the site, don't like the links chosen (i.e. library behavior) (ig)
  • great tip under "Assignment Tips" link - "walk through your assignments before giving them to students" (sw) I agree, but do we give the impression of "teaching them"? (jr) yes, the whole site had a "preachy" feel to it - wouldn't want that on our site (sw)
  • I liked the idea of a quick opening explanation letter with an overview of offerings. It would give new visitors an idea of the sites mission/philosophy. (km)
  • I also liked how (under the visits section) the link gives an overview of the class that is available for students from the library. it gives the educator an idea of what to expect without having to first contact a staff member. (km)

http://lcweb2.loc.gov/learn/

  • I like the idea of being able to print pictures from the American Memory Collection.  It would be great to offer links to posters, pictures, etc. (ig)
Why reinvent the wheel? Let's put this on our "Teacher Web Resources" section as an annotated resource? I am not sure that WE (HCPL) needs to create lesson plans to post to our website, but we can offer links to site like this, and state that we can work with teachers to help them locate materials for their lesson plans. (jr)
  • Lesson plans by themes is good (ig)

 http://www.pwcgov.org/default.aspx?topic=040034001820001268

  • I like the 2 separate e-mail alerts, one for elementry and one for high like the e-mail newsletter.  Older issues could be archved (ig)
I also like the email Newsletter concept, and I would like us to think about this as a marketing, partnership, reader's advisory effort. (jr)
  • The subscribe and unsubscribe to the newsletters off the site is a good idea ; also forgot your password is good. It would be interesting if a teacher could log on and be able to save information off our site using a sign on (ig)
  •  They have their AR lists available on-line. Could we do this? (km)
  • I corrected this link as the previous one did not work ... but I didn't find anything here worth keeping. ib

http://www.lvdl.org/Youth/teachers.html

  • The Teachers' toolbox is good.  The classroom connection bag is a great idea. (ig)
  • I also really really like the Teacher's Toolbox. I think that this method of organization works really well. The heading are informative and tell users exactly what they will find at that link. I think we should incorporate this idea. I especially like the "Contact the School Liaison" and the "Teacher Connection Newsletter". Great. (jr)
  • I saw several good ideas in the teacher's toolbox. First, there was the sign-up form for displaying classroom projects at the library. I know that Fallston could use more displays. Maybe other branches as well. This would be a good partnership opportunity. (km)
  • I liked the simple and easy to understand definition of "online database" that was found in the homework help area. If only all teachers and parents could understand that databases and the web are not the same. (km)
  • I also liked the "make a recommendation" feature. (km)

 http://www.hclib.org/ToolboxForTeachers/

  • Classroom workshops - this would be a good way to promote the Educators' Team (ig)
  • Again, I like the idea of a "Toolbox For Teachers"-giving them the tools they need. Like the concept of the newsletter here as well-seems lots of libraries are offering one. (jr)
  •

http://cuyahogalibrary.org/TeacherSpace.aspx

  • under "Library Educational Resources" - had a link to LEAP kits, toys, and puppets - perhaps we could feature our Project Leap materials and the BA children's kits? (sw) Or, just link to the LEAP page that is being developed? (jr) - I think just a link as it is my understanding that we are stressing LEAP as FUN and not homework/school (ib)
  • Recommended Reading (new education books in collection) - this also might be nice to include (sw) agree. (jr)

http://www.westportlibrary.org/research/forteachers/assignmentalert.html

  • I like the two separate e-mail alerts - one for elementry and one for high school
Would we have this email alert go to different staff, or how would it work? We would probably want a form to fill out instead of just an alert if we are differentiating between grades? (jr)
